Cortex Laser FAQs

What is the Cortex laser?

The Cortex is an advanced laser that provides both CO2 and Er:Yag lasers in one system. It is the first laser resurfacing system to offer both wavelengths to effectively treat a wide variety of skin complaints. Treatment with the CO2 wavelength is utilized to stimulate collagen production and improve the overall tone and texture of your skin, while the Er:Yag wavelength is able to address specific problems, including fine lines, sun spots, and acne scars.

How is treatment with the Cortex different from other laser treatments?

The Cortex is a unique laser resurfacing system as it is able to improve the overall tone and texture of the skin and address specific complaints with minimal downtime and pain. Laser resurfacing treatments with CO2 lasers are known to be highly effective, offering some of the best results in laser resurfacing; however, treatments with older CO2 technologies were quite painful and involved lengthy recovery periods. The Cortex offers extremely effective results, but is gentler than older technologies. Most patients require only local anesthesia during laser resurfacing treatments. Thanks to these unique features, treatments with the Cortex are growing in popularity in NYC.

How does the Cortex help reverse the signs of aging?

The Cortex relies upon the body’s natural healing response to reverse signs of aging. With age, collagen production slows and our skin begins to lose volume and show an increase in fine lines and wrinkles. When collagen production increases, the signs of aging are minimized and the skin will regain some of its lost volume. During the treatment, the laser creates microscopic holes across the skin, which causes a contraction of the tissues beneath the skin. This will stimulate the production of collagen over the coming months, resulting in fresher, rejuvenated skin. In addition, the Cortex is able to erase specific signs of again, such as sun spots, pigmentation changes, and fine lines.

How long do treatments take and how many sessions are required?

Treatments typically take between 30 minutes and an hour to perform. Most patients see excellent results with just one session, but as many as three may be required based upon your unique skin type and the extent of aging you have experienced. In New York, many patients request laser resurfacing at the same time as a facelift or brow lift. In most cases, the treatment can be performed at the same time.

What should I expect during the recovery period?

After your laser resurfacing treatment, your skin will begin to undergo a number of changes. You will likely experience temporary swelling, minor pain, and redness, which are normal and expected side effects of laser resurfacing treatments. The majority of these side effects will resolve within 2 days, and most patients can return to normal activities within a week. After 5 or 6 days, your skin will begin to peel which can last for up to 10 days. During this time, new skin will start to appear and you will begin to see the results of your treatment. The full results will be seen after several months, when increased collagen production provides skin with a fresher, rejuvenated appearance.
