Plastic Cities: Where Plastic Surgery is King

Plastic surgery is a booming business in the USA. Each year, more women and men across the nation turn to cosmetic surgeons to help them improve their appearance and boost their self-esteem. Inevitably, plastic surgery centers are concentrated in large metropolitan areas and on the two coasts, but this doesn’t mean that surgery isn’t available everywhere.
Total Beauty recently analyzed statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), along with regional stats and surgeon directories from another major plastic surgery organization, plus the most recently available U.S. Census statistics, to come up with a figure for how many plastic surgeons there are, per capita, in various cities throughout the United States.
They also compared their outcomes from other recent analyses, to come up with a clearer picture. Here is what they came up with…
What Cities Are on Top?
No. 9: Rochester, N.Y.
That’s right, Rochester — not The Big Apple — has the most plastic surgeons per capita in New York State. Although New York City likely has more plastic surgeons than any other American city, on a per capita basis the number of surgeons is low. But Rochester, which has 17 plastic surgeons, has seven or eight plastic surgeons per 100,000 residents.
No. 8: Atlanta, Ga.
Topping the list of cities in the Deep South is Atlanta, Ga.
No. 7: St. Louis, Missouri
With 40-plus plastic surgeons, the city of St. Louis has around 11 plastic surgeons per 100,000 residents.
No. 6: Salt Lake City, Utah
Utah’s capital and largest city have around 24 plastic surgeons per 100,000 residents.
No. 5: Richmond, Virginia
The capital of Virginia has around 12 plastic surgeons per 100,000 residents. Surely the fact that the city is home to a plethora of renowned medical schools and plastic surgery centers accounts for why many of these surgeons choose to base themselves in Richmond.
No. 4 (a tie): Tucson and Scottsdale, Arizona
Scottsdale has around 13 plastic surgeons per 100,000 residents, which is more than Tucson has. However, Tucson’s No. 5 ranking in “Men’s Health” for most plastic surgeries is something that can’t be ignored. Moreover, Scottsdale and Tucson belong to the region with the largest number of plastic surgery procedures performed, according to one prominent plastic surgery organization.
No. 3: Miami, Florida
According to Total Beauty, Miami is home to about 10 surgeons per 100,000 residents.
No. 2: San Francisco, California
SF has about eight surgeons per 100,000 residents.
No. 1: Beverly Hills, California
Though Beverly Hills is often counted as part of Los Angeles, it has at least 72 plastic surgeons! Extrapolating, if the city were bigger it would probably have over 200 plastic surgeons per 100,000 people.
What Makes It Big? Supply or Demand?
Both. For example, the amount of wealth concentrated in Beverly Hills — and the popularity of plastic surgery among certain wealthy cohorts (movie stars, helloooo) — obviously makes it a good place to do business and therefore attracts surgeons to this locale. But in turn, the sheer number of plastic surgeons in Beverly Hills also drives patients to this location.
How Do I Know Where to Go?
The popularity of plastic surgery in a given city should not be a determining factor when choosing a surgeon to perform your facial plastic surgery. There are good cosmetic surgeons all over the country and indeed in many areas abroad. Instead, focus on education, training, board certification, facilities, and especially, experience and success with the procedure. If you are interested in having a facial cosmetic procedure, look for a surgeon that is board-certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPS).
It’s important to note that there are certain conveniences and safety-related pluses to having surgery in the city where you reside — namely the fact that your surgeon is right there if you need him or her. There are ways to account for these factors but they do need to be taken into consideration if you are considering a surgeon outside your area. An experienced board-certified facial plastic surgeon like Dr. Sam Rizk can discuss all of this with you and steer you in the right direction.
